Adding new and exciting color to your home can be a big undertaking. How do you choose the right color? How do you pick complimenting or contrasting colors? What do different colors do to affect mood?
Let us help you in finding a perfect color to update your drab space! This time around, we will be looking at Periwinkle!
“A Symbol of Transition”
Periwinkle was named the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 (their specific shade is named Very Peri). This blue hue sits between true blue and purple on the color wheel, but doesn’t have near enough red to be classified as a true purple. We are seeing it pop up in everything from modern art and digital design, to video games and social media trends. Periwinkle is a versatile color worth exploring. From Pantone’s own website: “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” added Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. We hope to help make Periwinkle the answer to your own color conundrum.
Using Periwinkle in your Home
Periwinkle can represent renewal of both life and friendships. It can have a relaxing and calming effect, which can make it an ideal color for bedrooms or other rooms where you need to unwind. Periwinkle, like most blues, can inspire feelings of trust and respect (great for an office space shared with others). We also love this color for nurseries, where the influence of serenity and peace can be beneficial when dealing with fussy kiddos.
You don’t need to make it the sole focus of a room to reap the relaxing vibes. Periwinkle is a beautiful accent color as well. Contrasted against existing white or off-white walls will immediately create a lovely effect. Use it on one wall, or in accent pillows or throws for a wonderful pop of color. Reupholstering a worn out couch or chair in periwinkle, or a pattern using it, is also a great alternative to painting!
Accent, Compliment, Contrast
Using lighter pastel periwinkles against darker shades of the same can create a striking contrast within itself. This flower-inspired shade also pairs well with other floral-inspired colors like pale yellows, pinks, and greens. Cream and beiges also compliment this shade beautifully! Periwinkle can also be a great compliment to help tone down brighter colors like magenta or even bright greens. We also love a Periwinkle in floor rugs, or accented in wall art. The more small ways you can add a theme color, the more intentional and put-together your room becomes.
