Layer your Windows for a Dramatic Effect & Improved Functionality

Windows are a large part of every room, yet they’re often overlooked as simply something that needs a cover. However, with creativity, they can become a beautiful part of your room’s overall design. When you layer your window coverings, you can achieve some dramatic effects for your room’s overall design, as well as add versatility that can add privacy where you want it, and the ability to control the light levels beyond “bright and dark”.

Let’s look at how to layer window coverings like a pro.

Layering Windows

Layering Windows for Looks

Incorporate a Variety of Patterns and Colors

If you’re going solely for the aesthetic properties, layers should have stark differences. The most common example of this technique is to use solid color sheers underneath heavier draperies that are colored differently or even patterned. This is a great way to tie in a color or pattern that is found elsewhere in your room without making it overwhelm the space, especially if it’s a busy one.

However, don’t feel like you must do sheer, plain white curtains underneath! Experiment with the pattern in your room on the sheers and plain-colored draperies.

Layer with Shades or Blinds Instead

Shades and blinds come in a wide variety of options as well. The under layer doesn’t have to be sheer curtain panels by any means. Beautiful patterns, colors, textures and styles can be paired with draperies to create unique looks for any room.

This example utilizes textured, somewhat sheer roman shades with drapery panels for a stunning and unique finished look.

Control Light Levels and Privacy with Layers

If you’re going solely for the aesthetic properties, layers should have stark differences. The most common example of this technique is to use solid color sheers underneath heavier draperies that are colored differently or even patterned. This is a great way to tie in a color or pattern that is found elsewhere in your room without making it overwhelm the space, especially if it’s a busy one.

This example is three-fold. The pleated valance adds interest and style that matches with the blackout drapery panels over a light filtering roller shade.

When you want plenty of light, open it all up! If you’d like to still allow some light into the room but desire some privacy, you can simply pull down or close the sheers or light-filtering shades. The best part about blackout layers as the outer layer is the ability to achieve near-total darkness for better sleep, movie nights, or whenever you don’t want light coming through.
