After a kitchen and family room renovation, custom Roman shades and drapery added the warmth, privacy and finishing touches the spaces were missing.
A renovation can transform a room and still leave it feeling just a little unfinished.
That was the case for this Springboro, Ohio homeowner. The kitchen and family room had already been beautifully updated, but the windows needed something that would soften the spaces, provide practical light control and privacy, and feel at home with the colors and patterns already in the rooms.
The homeowner wasn’t sure exactly what that should be. Valances, drapery and shades were all possibilities.
Instead of starting with a particular product, we started with the rooms.
The Design Challenge
The home already had plenty of personality: patterned rugs, upholstered furniture, decorative pillows and a soft blue palette.
The window treatments needed to add interest without competing with those elements.
They also needed to work differently throughout the adjoining spaces while still making the kitchen, dining area and family room feel connected.
That led us to a combination of custom Roman shades and drapery.
A Softer Look for the Family Room
For the family room, we selected classic Roman shades in a relaxed waterfall style.

A blue striped fabric from Carole Fabrics picks up the blues already used throughout the room while adding another layer of pattern and texture. The stripe has enough personality to be noticed, but its classic design works comfortably alongside the other prints in the space.

The waterfall construction gives the shades a softer, more relaxed appearance while preserving the practical advantages of a shade: privacy and adjustable light control.

Connecting the Kitchen and Dining Area
The adjoining kitchen and dining space called for something quieter.

Here, we used a coordinating solid textured fabric for the Roman shades. With windows wrapping around the dining area, the simpler fabric allows the architecture and natural light to remain prominent while carrying the same color story from one room into the next.
The treatments don’t match exactly.
They belong together.
And that distinction is what keeps adjoining rooms feeling coordinated without making them feel overly designed.
The Finishing Layer
Two pairs of custom drapery side panels complete the project, using Carole Fabrics and Paris Texas Hardware.
The combination of Roman shades and drapery gives the rooms another layer of softness and makes the newly renovated spaces feel more intentional and complete.
What had felt like beautiful rooms that were still missing something now feels finished.

The Result
This project is a good example of why window treatments are often one of the final decisions in a room but one of the decisions that can make the biggest difference.
The Roman shades provide privacy and light control. The fabrics introduce color and texture. The drapery adds softness and dimension.
Together, they help the kitchen, dining area and family room feel connected while allowing each space to retain its own personality.
